Rakuten AI boss diverges from Big Tech in prioritizing low cost
Ting Cai, head of Rakuten Group's artificial intelligence team, has the task of creating AI systems that would augment the company's many businesses at a minimal cost. Rakuten Group is expanding its AI team under the stewardship of a Google veteran and building models with a focus on cost efficiency. Ting Cai, now three years into his tenure at the head of the e-commerce pioneer's artificial intelligence team, has the task of creating AI systems that would augment the company's many businesses and support the handling of commercial transactions at a minimal cost. He oversees a team that's grown to 1,000 this year and has a battery of "thousands" of Nvidia chips to work with. Tokyo-based Rakuten is wrestling with a struggling mobile business and constant competition in online shopping, both of which could get a significant boost from effective deployment of new AI tools.
6 tactics to make artificial intelligence work on the frontlines
Artificial intelligence is a transformative tool in the workplace -- except when it isn't. For top managers, state-of-the art AI tools are a no-brainer: in theory, they increase revenues, decrease costs, and improve the quality of products and services. But in the wild, it's often just the opposite for frontline employees who actually need to integrate these tools into their daily work. Not only can AI tools yield few benefits, but they can also introduce additional work and decrease autonomy. Our research on the introduction of 15 AI clinical decision support tools over the past five years at Duke Health has shown that the key to successfully integrating them is recognizing that increasing the value for frontline employees is as important as making sure the tools work in the first place.
Qualcomm beefs up artificial intelligence team with purchase of Twenty Billion Neurons
Qualcomm said Monday that it recently acquired the assets of Twenty Billion Neurons, a Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence/computer vision startup that develops avatars that can see and interact with people in a human-like way. The San Diego mobile technology company declined to say how much it paid for TwentyBN, which has locations in Berlin and Toronto. But it is likely a relatively small deal. Qualcomm said the company has under 20 employees. It raised about $10 million in venture capital from M12 -- Microsoft's venture capital fund-- and others since it was founded in 2015 by Chief Executive Roland Memisevic. Memisevic was the co-head of MILA, a well-respected AI research institute in Montreal.
3 Things to Consider When Setting Up Artificial Intelligence Team
Artificial intelligence (AI) is obviously a developing power in the technology business. Artificial intelligence is becoming the dominant center point at conferences and indicating potential over a wide variety of industries, including retail and manufacturing. New products are being incorporated with virtual assistants, while chatbots are responding to client inquiries on everything from your online office provider's website to your web hosting service provider's support page. In the interim, organizations, for example, Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce are incorporating AI as an intelligence layer over their whole tech stack. Indeed, AI is definitely having its moment.

So how does a business build at Artificial Intelligence team? Here's one approach WRAL TechWire
RALEIGH โ One of the most perplexing challenges facing businesses wanting to explore Artificial Intelligence as a tool is "How do I build a team?" Rett Crocker CEO and CTO of UDU, an artificial intelligence firm in Raleigh, has plenty of advice. In an interview with Alexander Ferguson, CEO of YourLocalStudio, for its UpTech series focusing on AI, Crocker explains his reasoning in this excerpt of an interview published June 20. "First off, I wouldn't build anything from scratch anymore. There's just almost no point in that because of all of the existing tools that are out there, that are open source" Crocker says.
WNC writer part of international magazine's artificial intelligence team
Esquire Singapore is the latest entity to use artificial intelligence in creating articles with its April edition, set to come out in a few weeks, says Gary Jackson of Qualex Consulting Services. Jackson, based in Western North Carolina, is one of three men and the only American, who created the AI program, called Squire, that will create 100 pages for the magazine. He says another 100 pages will be created by humans. "It basically is fed the content and then it begins to write and you basically ask how many words do you want to be written by the topic and then it tries to put it together," said Jackson. He said it won't replace humans as there are several things people must do in order for Squire to work.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning - Disruption in Business
"Google will fulfill its mission only when its search engine is AI-complete. You guys know what that means? Larry Page "Just as electricity transformed almost everything 100 years ago, today I actually have a hard time thinking of an industry that I don't think AI (Artificial Intelligence) will transform in the next several years." Andrew Ng "I am telling you, the world's first trillionaires are going to come from somebody who masters AI and all its derivatives, and applies it in ways we never thought of." Mark Cuban "We are entering a new world.
Artificial Intelligence Teams Being Acquired For $2.5m/employee; Employee Value Often Far Exceeds Business Value
Twitter just paid $150m for 14-person Magic Pony, a UK-based AI visual search company barely anyone had heard of before the deal. At $10m per employee it marks a high water mark in AI for what is essentially a team acquisition. Magister has tracked 26 AI driven deals since 2014 in the US, Europe and Israel, 11 of which involved companies with less than 50 employees which were acquired largely, or entirely, for the team and capability. Across all 11 deals, the median price paid per employee has reached $2.4m, meaning a high quality AI company with 40 employees would be valued at near $100m. Even if it had little or no revenue.
Uber building an artificial intelligence team in Toronto
Uber, in the midst of legal battle with Google over self-driving car technology, is building a new artificial intelligence team in Toronto to help improve its autonomous vehicle software. The team will be part of Uber's Advanced Technologies Group, the unit that's developing much of its autonomous technology. It will be led by Raquel Urtasun, an expert in the AI fields of machine learning and computer vision at the University of Toronto. Uber is also investing US$5 million over several years in the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a non-profit affiliated with the university. The city of Toronto has seen many researchers defect to the U.S. To prevent further brain drain, it set up an urban innovation hub, called the MaRS Discovery District, to attract companies and encourage investment in Canadian startups.
